The five homesteads

Five families, five cultures, one walk between them — Ndebele first, in the same order most afternoons.

Why the walk, the fire and the table

Lesedi means light

The village takes its name from the seSotho word for light. It was initiated in 1995 inside the Cradle of Humankind, the World Heritage Site north-west of Johannesburg where some of the region's best-known hominid fossil discoveries have been made. Five homesteads sit inside it, each representing one of South Africa's cultures: Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele.

One family per homestead

Each homestead is described by the village as home to a family living according to the traditions of their own culture, with a representative from that culture guiding visitors through it. In the village's own framing, Zulu is the warrior nation, Ndebele the colourful nation, Xhosa the proud nation, Pedi the warm-hearted nation and Basotho the mountain-dwelling nation.

From walk to boma to table

The programme runs in one direction: the welcome and the walk first, while there's still light, then the boma as the sun goes down, then dinner. It isn't a static museum you wander at your own pace — the walk, the fire and the meal are one evening, not three separate stops.

Ndebele

The welcome, among the geometric wall paintings

Visitors are welcomed here first, among the homestead's bold geometric wall paintings — the craft the village itself credits as Ndebele's best known.

Zulu

Beadwork and the warrior homestead

Framed by the village as the warrior nation, with beadwork patterns that traditionally carry their own coded meanings.

Xhosa

Blankets, clay pots and homestead life

The proud nation, in the village's framing — its homestead shows the blankets and clay vessels used in everyday Xhosa household life.

Pedi

Dress and the warm-hearted homestead

Called the warm-hearted nation by the village; Pedi (Bapedi) dress and dance customs from Limpopo are shown here.

Basotho

Grass hats and blankets from the mountains

The mountain-dwelling nation — the conical grass hat and the woven blanket are the homestead's most recognisable pieces.

The evening programme includes transfers from Johannesburg both ways, so allow the full afternoon and evening rather than fitting the walk around anything else that day.

The boma performance

As the light goes, the walk ends at the boma for the evening's song and dance — the operator's own name for it is Ingoma.

  1. 01

Into the boma as the sun goes down

The walk through the five homesteads ends here, timed to finish as the light fades.

  2. 02

    Drums and the opening songs

The performance opens with drumming and song before the dancing itself begins.

  3. 03

Dances drawn from the five homesteads

Much of the programme draws on the traditions of the homesteads you've just walked through, performed together rather than as five separate acts.

  4. 04

    An invitation to join in

Guests are invited up to dance before the performance closes — this isn't a seated-only show.

  5. 05

Out of the boma and into dinner

The evening moves straight from the boma to the Nyama Choma restaurant for the buffet.

Nyama Choma: the dinner

Dinner follows the boma at the Nyama Choma restaurant, the village's buffet dining room.

A buffet, not a plated menu

The restaurant serves a buffet of traditional African fare rather than a fixed plated set menu, described as including dishes such as Kalahari lamb alongside more adventurous options like crocodile and ostrich.

Three regions on one buffet

The room is arranged in sections evoking different parts of the African continent — a South African section, an East African-styled section and a North African-styled room with floor seating — rather than a single serving line.

Say so if you have dietary needs

As with any fixed buffet, flag dietary requirements when you book rather than at the table, so the kitchen knows what to put aside.

The room after the show

Dinner is served after the boma performance, not before it, so the evening runs walk, then fire, then table.

Getting to Lesedi

The transfer from Johannesburg

The GetYourGuide package includes hotel pickup and a return drive, roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way depending on where you're staying and the traffic on the day.

Self-driving

Lesedi's own address is R512, Lanseria, Gauteng, inside the Cradle of Humankind — if you're driving yourself rather than taking the included transfer, confirm the exact route and gate with the village before you set out.

What the afternoon looks like

The programme runs from an included pickup through the homestead walk, the boma performance and the buffet dinner, before the return drive — treat it as most of an afternoon and evening, not a quick stop.

What to wear

Comfortable shoes for the walk between homesteads, and a layer for after dark — the Highveld cools quickly once the sun is down, even after a warm afternoon.

Lesedi Cultural Village questions

What actually happens during the evening?

After pickup, you're welcomed at the Ndebele homestead and walked through all five homesteads — Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele — before the boma performance at dusk and a buffet dinner at the Nyama Choma restaurant, then the drive back.

Is dinner included?

Yes. The buffet dinner at the Nyama Choma restaurant is part of the programme, served after the boma performance rather than before it.

Are the transfers from Johannesburg included?

Yes, the GetYourGuide package includes hotel pickup and a return drive, typically 45 minutes to an hour each way depending on where you're staying.

How long does the whole thing take?

Plan for most of an afternoon and evening once pickup, the homestead walk, the boma performance, dinner and the return drive are all counted — it isn't a quick stop.

Can I drive myself instead of taking the transfer?

Lesedi's address is R512, Lanseria, Gauteng, inside the Cradle of Humankind, so self-driving is possible — confirm the route and any self-drive arrangements with the village directly if you're not taking the included transfer.

What's actually on the Nyama Choma buffet?

A traditional African buffet described as including dishes such as Kalahari lamb alongside more adventurous options like crocodile and ostrich, served across sections themed on different parts of the continent.

Is it suitable for children?

The walk and the boma performance are family-oriented and widely visited by children; the more adventurous buffet dishes sit alongside plainer options, not the only thing on offer.

What does 'Lesedi' mean?

It's the seSotho word for light — the name the village has used since it opened in 1995 inside the Cradle of Humankind.

Can I book with free cancellation?

Yes. The GetYourGuide listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund, and many options let you reserve now and pay later — so you can hold your evening while you finish planning.
